The 3D Studio Cohort Fellows will immerse themselves in a dynamic exploration of three-dimensional art techniques through this hands-on, studio-based course. Fellows will engage with a variety of materials and processes, including mixed media, clay, and found objects, to create innovative and meaningful works. The course will encourage creative experimentation while focusing on technical skill development and conceptual thinking. In addition to developing their own projects, Fellows will study the work of influential artists such as Simone Leigh and Theaster Gates, whose sculptures explore themes of identity, cultural heritage, and the intersection of race, gender, and history. Through these studies, Fellows will gain a deeper understanding of how three-dimensional art can serve as a powerful tool for storytelling, cultural expression, and social commentary.
Special Topics: Textiles as Activism with Brittney Boyd Bullock
This course with renown, Memphis-based artist Brittney Boyd Bullock will offer critical research and global context around fiber, textiles and garments and how these mediums carry a social issues legacy. We will uncover and deconstruct the legacy of garments and how textiles are used as a form of protest and movement building. Spots are limited due to the need for more one-on-one instruction in this course!

We’re thrilled to offer a two-day workshop with Master Metalsmith Preston Jackson! At over 80 years old, Preston has made an indelible mark on the art world, and his visits to this region are rare. Thanks to a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts to our partner, the Metal Museum, this is a unique opportunity to learn directly from him.
Participants will explore Preston’s casting techniques and create their own cast aluminum reliefs. Lunch will be provided at CAM.
To participate, you’ll also need to commit to a few preparatory learning sessions with sculpture instructor Desmond Lewis during winter break. Space is limited to 12 students, and spots will be filled on a first-come, first-served basis.

This course will guide participants in a painting workshop designed to acquaint students with color theories, materials, composition, and techniques of painting. Color relationships as one of the essential features of painting will be analytically studied and explored through multiple interpretations and practices.

Artwork Documentation Workshop with Andres Arauz
The way you document your art, whether it’s with photographs, video, or scans, can make or break your application. In many cases, this documentation will be the only account of your work that an admissions department is exposed to. This session will guide students in learning how to document them correctly for college applications, scholarships, and other opportunities.

Join us for the 2025 Summer Fellowship Registration at Contemporary Arts Memphis HQ. 2025 Fellows will complete necessary forms related to health, programming, and other key details. This session will ensure that all logistical aspects—such as housing, media waivers, and safety protocols—are properly addressed before the start of the program. By participating in these critiques, Fellows will develop the ability to analyze their own work objectively, identify areas for improvement, and refine their creative process. The 3D Studio Cohort Fellows will immerse themselves in a dynamic exploration of three-dimensional art techniques through this hands-on, studio-based course. Fellows will engage with a variety of materials and processes, including mixed media, clay, and found objects, to create innovative and meaningful works. The course will encourage creative experimentation while focusing on technical skill development and conceptual thinking. In addition to developing their own projects, Fellows will study the work of influential artists such as Simone Leigh and Theaster Gates, whose sculptures explore themes of identity, cultural heritage, and the intersection of race, gender, and history. Through these studies, Fellows will gain a deeper understanding of how three-dimensional art can serve as a powerful tool for storytelling, cultural expression, and social commentary.
Selling Your Work with Brittney Boyd Bullock
From building relationships with galleries to monetizing your art skills entreprenuerally, this course is designed to orient young artists to the money-making side of being an artist. Taught artists and gallerists in the art world, you will complete this course knowing how to approach building relationships with galleries or clients, feel more confident pricing your work, and the steps you can take to get you in each direction.

The 3D Studio Cohort Fellows are encouraged to participate in Open Studio sessions, held on Tuesdays from 4:00 to 7:00 PM, Thursdays from 4:00 to 8:00 PM and Sundays from 12:00 to 4:00 PM generally, unless additional year-long programming is scheduled.
These sessions offer Fellows dedicated time to work on their projects and receive support as needed. Fellows are also invited to engage in special projects within the 3D Studio. Please note that 3D work requires consistent attention and care, so regular attendance at Open Studio is strongly recommended to ensure progress and success.
